This base of the climb is just off of Cathedral Oaks Road in Goleta. The first half of the ride takes you up the smooth pavement of Old San Marcos Pass which climbs along at a fairly consistent 7% grade punctuated by steeper sections around a few switchbacks. After passing over highway 154, the climb continues on Painted Cave Road. The first few hundred yards here are rather intimidating at around 10-12% and the rest of the climb settles back into a 7% grind again punctuated by steep hairpins on broken pavement. Another painful 10-12% stretch comes just after the shady relief of the Painted Cave area, but precedes the gentler slopes near the summit of the ride. When you see Atla Dr., the pain is over. If you descend the way you came, be prepared for some white-knuckle moments on the broken pavement of Painted Cave. By comparison, once you cross over 154 again to Old San Marcos Pass, youll think you are riding on cake frosting. Sweet!Find more climbs and routes near Old San Marcos Pass and Painted Cave Road
