Omloop Het Nieuwsblad : GHENT - GHENT
The "Omloop het Volk" was first organised in 1945, and named after the newspaper "Het Volk" ( = The People). It's the opener of the Belgian cycling season and therefore considered as an important race for many riders and teams. Since 2009, after the takeover of the newspaper "Het Volk", the name changed into "Omloop Het Nieuwsblad". The contest is part of the European continental circuit and is organized by Flanders Classics that also organizes the Tour of Flanders. Since 2006, there is also an edition for Women "Omloop voor Vrouwen". Since 2010, both contests take place on the same day.
