This is a lovely, quiet route off the SS63 Aulla-Fivizzano road. You turn off at a signpost for Gorasco and Pomarino, just near a garden shop. Theres a derelict factory there, too. Things soon improve. You follow the Bardine valley for the first mile or so, past a right turn for Pomarino. You take the next right turn and immediately start to climb. The road has been improved here and is in excellent condition for most of the way up. The road narrows to a single lane with passing places. You ascend through the characteristic Lunigiana chestnut forest. Theres a short section on the open hillside after a couple of miles when the road flattens out for a while. Then its up again via Ponzanello to a junction on the crest, looking down over the Tyrhenian sea. From here you turn left and its flat to Fosdinovo. This climb will not keep the real mountain goats happy but its a good one for climbers of moderate ability. The surface is really good and there is almost no traffic until you hit the crest.
