LF Routes

LF routes stands for "Landelijke fietsroutes" in Dutch, which represents a network of Long Distance Routes. The routes can traverse different regions and even different countries.

LF routes form an extensive nationwide network of over 4,500 km (2.796 mi) of cycle routes. While the bicycle network of numbered junctions is ideal for a day of cycling, the LF routes are actually very suitable for bicycle trekking or cycling holidays. You can follow one single LF route in its entirety. But you can also outline a tailormade bicycle tour based on different parts of the network.

Signposted in the two directions
LF signage poleLF signage roadside shelf The entire LF network is bidirectionally signposted. So it does not matter in which direction you ride the route. The signage consists of rectangular signs showing the route name, route number and the direction (a or b). The a-direction is from west to east or from north to south. The b-direction is from east to west or from south to north. The plates exist in two formats: the large ones are fixed on lampposts or road signs, the small ones are fixed on roadside boards. It's not exceptional if you see a numbered junction plate immediately below the LF-sign. This is the signage of the bicycle network of numbered junctions, designed for short cycling trips in the region.

LF routes combined with the network of numbered junctions
LF routes often go through town centers or pass railway stations, so a cyclist can easily pick up the route. But as a traveller, you may want to avoid the city. With the network of numbered junctions, you plan routes easily around the city. They also allow shortcuts and detours.
