Bicycle network of numbered junctions

The bicycle network of numbered junctions consists of routes which are created by connecting a series of numbered junctions. You cycle from junction to junction, following the (white-green) signs. At each sign it is clearly indicated to which other junction you can cycle. You'll find sign boards between the junctions which indicate the direction and the number of the junction where you are heading.

Here and there you'll also find panels with an overview of the local cycle network.

The best, often car-free, paths were selected for these routes. At the junctions, you'll often find panels with information about the network in the region. This way, you'll be able to determine the desired route and distance yourself. Freedom and flexibility are paramount!

Belgian and Dutch cycling networks
In the border area,
the Dutch cycling networks pass seamlessly to the Belgian cycling networks. You'll also have the route network of the National Cycle routes, which are often longer than the (thematic) junction routes, and suitable for longer cycling holidays.

History of the bicycle network of numbered junctions

The system originated in the mining industry. An ingenious system was invented to indicate "routes" underground, by assigning numbers to intersections . They were called the numbered junctions.

The system worked perfectly! Hugo Bollen, the ingeneer who had invented the system for the mines, also applied it to cycling routes.

Where? In Belgian Limburg and the Antwerp Campine. The cycle network then found its way from Limburg and Antwerp Campine to Brabant and the rest of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Everywhere in Europe, there are currently studies to integrate this system of numbered junctions.
