Stage 17
Alberto Contador realized the long-awaited turn in the Vuelta. The Spaniard won the 17th stage after he had escaped at the Fuente Dé and catched up with the runaway group. Finally, Contador left the group behind. Valverde ended 6 sec. of Contador and Rodriguez arrived more than two minutes later. Contador takes over the red jersey from Joaquim Rodriguez, who ends at the 3rd place in the general classification. Alejandro Valverde is now second.
