Paris-Roubaix 2014
The 112th edition of Paris-Roubaix, also known as "the Hell of the North", takes place on Sunday, April 13th.
The participants have to cope with 28 cobblestone strips, covering a total distance of more than 50 km. Nine of these cobblestone strips also figure in the 5th stage of the Tour de France 2014.
This edition covers a total distance of 257km, and is 3 km longer than the previous edition.
The first cobblestone part, after 100 km, lies in the surroundings of Troisville.
The first modification compared to the previous edition lies at about 120 km from the start, where the organisation planned a detour towards the cobblestone strips of Haussy (800m) and Saulzoir (1200m).
Just before Wallers, the cobbelstone strip of Famars (1200m) is re-integrated in the route. This year again, the "Bois de Wallers" (also called Trouée d'Arenberg) is the dangerous highlight of the race : it's the point where, especially at rainy weather, a lot of cyclists risk to crash.
From there on, the cobblestone strips succeed each other smoothly. The most famous one of the series is Mons-en-Pélève. And, at 15 km from the finish, there's still the Carrefour de l'Arbre, known for its decisive moves.
The last cobbelstone strip, at 1,5km from the finish, is peanuts compared to the other ones. At the end of this strip, the cyclists turn to the right, in the direction of the vélodrome, where the finish lies, after 1,5 lapses.
