The Passo Giau is best known as the second last and also the toughest climb of the Maratona dles Dolomites (if you're riding the longest course of 138km). Now and then, it's also integrated in the Giro course. In fact, the Passo Giau is a mountain pass between Cortina d'Ampezzo and the valley of the Cordevole river. That's also why the Passo Giau is always kept open, even during the Winter. You can climb it from 2 sides : from Selva di Cadore and from Pocol.
Selva di Cadore is the longest and heaviest climb, with a continuous climbing rate from about 10%, excepted from the bridge, which you have to cross. Nevertheless, it's a really magnificent climb, in a typical Dolomites setting. You'll start between the trees and arrive 900m higher.
If you climb it from Pocol (start in Cortina d'Ampezzo) the quality of the route will be better, the climb will be less steep, but yet the scenery will be less spectacular.
